REMOTE Assistant Controller | The Profession | 

The Art of Education University (AOEU) is seeking an Assistant Controller to join our rapidly growing institution. This individual will be essential to the achievement and coordination of activities in the Finance Department and who has the ability to tackle advanced financial record keeping, the ability to maintain and operate multiple division and departmental accounts while working collaboratively with and eventually leading other bookkeepers within the department.  This position requires the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.

The Details | Assistant Controller | 

Essential Functions

  • Assist in maintaining consistency and accuracy of financial records. 
  • Verify, allocate, and post details of business transactions to subsidiary accounts -- posting from invoices, expense reports, receipts, and the like.
  • Ability to summarize details in separate ledgers and transfer data to the general ledger.
  • Reconcile and balance accounts across the institution.
  • Ability to compile reports to show statistics, such as receipts and expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, profit and loss, and other items pertinent to the institution's operations.
  • Perform detailed research for department-specific projects.
  • Assist with management of state taxes, business registrations, and miscellaneous filings. 
  • Oversee and provide guidance as well as assigning duties to support other bookkeepers in the department.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding and compliance with departmental procedures and company policy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks and spreadsheets
  • Ability to learn multiple technology platforms and services
  • Previous accounting experience is strongly preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively, independently, and with multi-stakeholder execution
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to concisely articulate complex information, both verbally and in writing, in a professional and fact-based manner
  • Strong sense of self-motivation and self-direction
  • Demonstrated ability to work under stress and tight deadlines
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail

Work Environment


  • Position requires considerable concentration and focus.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift items such as laptops, monitors, and the like.


  • Ability to view computer screens for significant periods.  The Art of Education University is an online university; therefore, 95-98% of one’s time will be on or using technology.
  • Ability to use a laptop or other keyboard with accuracy.
  • Ability to hear at normal levels and through electronic devices such as laptops, earbuds, phones, and the like.

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting strongly preferred 


  • 5+ years of Bookkeeping and/or Accounting experience strongly preferred  

Compensation and Benefits


Structured as a full-time exempt, salaried position, this individual will report directly to Gwen Jass, Controller.  Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.  Payroll is remitted monthly on the 15th of each month. 


Group healthcare plans are available.  The Art of Education University will contribute 100% for full-time health dental, and vision, employee-only coverage.  Family coverage is available at an additional premium.

The Art of Education University offers participation, upon hire, in a 401K plan with up to a 4% match of employee contributions.

Appropriate and up-to-date technology is provided.

Unlimited self-managed PTO is offered to full-time employees of AOEU.  Extended vacations must be pre-approved.  Flexibility exists so long as responsibilities are fulfilled and careful planning and communication are evident.
